When we are born, we are surrounded by loving caregivers. Why should end-of-life care be any less compassionate or complete?

History:

Hospice of Helping Hands, Inc. was established in 1979. Since that time, it has continued to grow and has become recognized as a source of compassionate, comprehensive care for the terminally ill and their families. It is a non-profit organization.

Hospice emphasizes quality of life by keeping the patient as comfortable as possible while remaining at home. With caring and professional attitudes, the hospice team helps patients and their families prepare for death in ways that are acceptable to them.

After death, Hospice continues to assist the family with bereavement services and support for 15 months.

West Branch Regional Medical Center has promoted and assisted with the development of Hospice of Helping Hands, Inc. In 1991, this program became a licensed hospice under the Michigan Department of Public Health guidelines and was granted Medicare certification.

Services:

Nursing care, Home Health Aide, Social Worker, Chaplain, Physician, Certified Volunteer Services, Bereavement, Support Groups, Fundraising Activities

Eligibility:

Hospice of Helping Hands, Inc. services are available to residents of Arenac, Iosco, Ogemaw, Gladwin, Roscommon and Oscoda counties; and to patients with a terminal illness who desire no further curative treatment for their condition.

Hospice requires that the primary physician certify that the patient is terminally ill.

Funding:

Admission to the Hospice program is based on need, not the ability to pay. Primary financial support comes from Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance. Remaining financial support comes from the community and from individual donors, gifts, memorials, grants and funds raised by the Guild.

All volunteers are members of the Guild and receive their training and support from the Coordinator of Volunteer Services.
